Fiberglass cloth is a widely used material in various fields, mainly composed of a cloth like material made from slender glass fibers through special processes. It plays an important role in industries such as construction, industry, electronics, and transportation due to its excellent chemical corrosion resistance, lightweight and high strength, superior insulation performance, and good heat resistance. Although the name "fiberglass cloth" may sound simple, its production process, structural composition, and application methods are actually very rich and complex.
Glass fiber cloth is a fabric made from glass fibers through spinning, weaving, and other processes. Its main raw material is high-purity silicate glass, which is stretched into slender fibers through special processes and then woven or sewn to form a cloth like material. The diameter of these fibers is usually around a few micrometers, much thinner than human hair, and has a very high specific surface area.
The structure of fiberglass cloth is mainly composed of long fibers and interwoven fiber webs, forming a tough and elastic material. According to different usage needs, different textile methods can be used, such as plain weave, twill weave, or satin weave, to adjust their performance characteristics. In addition to the basic fibers, some additives or additives may also be added to improve their surface properties, heat resistance, or detail characteristics.
*High strength and high modulus: This is one of the most significant characteristics of fiberglass cloth. Although it originates from brittle glass, once pulled into extremely fine fibers, its strength will be greatly enhanced. After weaving into fabric, it exhibits excellent tensile strength, which means it is not easily pulled apart. Its modulus is very high, which means it is not easily deformed under stress and has good dimensional stability.
*Heat resistance and flame retardancy: Glass fiber cloth itself is an inorganic non-metallic material with high heat resistance. It does not burn and can maintain its structural integrity in high temperature environments, with a melting point typically reaching several hundred degrees Celsius or higher. This makes it an indispensable material in the fields of high-temperature insulation and fire prevention.
*Corrosion resistance: Glass fiber cloth has good resistance to most chemicals except hydrofluoric acid and concentrated alkaline solution, and is not easily corroded. This makes it highly applicable in chemical environments, wastewater treatment, and other settings.
*Electrical insulation: Glass fiber is an excellent electrical insulator and does not conduct electricity. The fabric woven from it also has good electrical insulation properties and is widely used in the electronic and electrical industry for circuit boards, insulation sleeves, etc.
*Dimensional stability and resistance to creep: Under normal temperature and usage conditions, glass fiber cloth hardly absorbs moisture and has a low coefficient of thermal expansion, so its shape and size are minimally affected by changes in environmental temperature and humidity. It also has strong resistance to slow deformation (i.e. creep) under long-term loads.
